Word of Mouth

Words are powerful.

Word of Mouth School

We offer English courses with a focus on writing composition as a supplement to both home school and public school curriculums.

We can help foster a new love and appreciation for writing while providing valuable skills that your children will be able to wield throughout their lives.

Words should matter to us because they matter to God.

He is wordy.

Language is thought connection. Working on your language is working on how you create thought connections for yourself and in your communication with other people.

Our ability or inability to use language can have a dramatic impact on our lives. Learning to use words well requires effort, but it doesn’t have to be intimidating.

Words can be tools- or weapons.

Keep them sharp.

Course Information

Classes will include basic grammar lessons, in-class writing, and homework assignments.

Poetry

Poetry is a heart language. It allows expression in a way that other kinds of writing do not.

Short Stories

Stories become part of us. They build imagination. They shape minds and character.

Paragraphs/Essays

Language is communication. It is thought connection. Paragraphs and essays connect those thoughts in logical order.

"The lessons learned in this class are applicable to writing and to life. If you are looking to improve your writing and yourself, Shauna is a great teacher to have. My daughter has improved in her grammar and writing skills since taking Shauna’s class this year."

I did enjoy this class. I did not enjoy the essays too much, but I know I need to know everything about them! I enjoyed the poetry the most. It was really difficult, but I did enjoy it.

"The experience with the teacher was the best part of the class. Her taking the time to make sure we understood. I've never had a teacher to do that."

This year’s co-op English class has been the best class yet! I enjoyed mostly everything you taught us. I surprised myself when we were writing poems! You made them exciting and colorful. I have always thought I didn’t care for poems until you brought them to us. I have learned so much more in your class than any other English I’ve taken. You gave me useful information that actually made sense. You always bring such fun, creative energy to class which I LOVE! Thank you SO much for your patience, kindness, and wisdom you bring every class! You are a great teacher, and I’ll miss you next year! Thanks again! <3

Beginning the class, I did not expect much. I figured it would be like every other class that completely overwhelmed me. English has always seemed so random and confusing. The rules for English were impossible to learn. It was like a tsunami of information that did not feel necessary to know. I’m not a writer. Why did I need to know this stuff? After the first class, I was already excited. This was much easier than I expected. The freedom of poetry gave me an appreciation for writing. As classes went on, I was introduced to the tools that I needed to write harder stuff than poetry. The way the classes were set to go from easy to hard was genius. Taking more than one class to teach me how to write an essay was very helpful. I no longer fear the word “essay.” I feel as if I can easily tackle it. As I grow and expand my horizons, with the help of this class, I find writing very important and influential.

I learned tons in English this year. I thought that the pseudonym was cool. I could write on whatever I wanted, and nobody knew who I was. I am really bad at picking a topic to write on, but I feel like I got better and better at that. Nothing to me was super hard or super easy. I don’t know what to say other than it really was a great class.

This year has been the most enjoyable semesters of high school English yet. Adding in the competition this year really excited me. I was surprised when I won the poetry section, but it turned out to be the confidence boost I needed. After the poetry section, college work started piling up, but I still enjoyed the class. I was also surprised to learn that I almost won short stories (I guess I shouldn’t have forgotten that 15 point vocabulary bonus.) Thank you, Mrs. Shauna. I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into the structure of this class. Mrs. Iva would be very proud. I was challenged in new ways like I’ve never been before. I enjoyed the creative writing aspect of this class and am sad that I won’t be here next year. You are amazing.

I really liked the English class this semester or year. However, some of it has been enjoyable while some was not. It is school though. I particularly liked writing poems. One poem I wrote, I considered putting to music and sending it to you, but I changed my mind. I didn’t, unfortunately, like the essay section, but I have never liked essays and I don’t think that will ever change. I really did surprise myself with my poems. I had no idea I could write a decent one. I am very glad we did the poetry section. I even let some of my family read some of them, and they loved them. My aunt even wanted a copy. Overall, I liked the English class.

I've enjoyed everything except for the essays. The debates were the best part of the class, and I was shocked that I could enjoy writing poems and short stories.

I didn't like the quizzes at the beginning, but I enjoyed the debates. I was surprised at how well I do with poems.

The worst part of the class was writing essays. The best part was poetry. I would do poems again.

I entered this year slightly nervous and a little bit more unwilling, but I’m glad my mom made me do it. If I hadn’t, my writing would be worse, and my grammar would probably have declined. I’m also glad I got the social experience. I’m glad I was in a class with my friends because we got some laughs. I think the experience of reading another person’s story/poem/essay was educational. Some of the things I read in this class made me stop for reflection. This class was a maturing thing for me. Thank you so much Teacher Mom.

Booming thunder woke the young girl from a gentle slumber. Rain began to fall hard on the battered tin roof. She traced the living room for dear sweet Auntie, who she found lying on the couch, dosed off with her mouth open. The television was the only source of light in that shabby old house, which she didn’t mind. The darkness and its unknowns never seemed to trouble her, quite a paradox to the usual child’s behavior... READ MORE
We all know that feeling when your mind is going everywhere, from the worst to the best possibilities. Your heart starts to race, your palms start to sweat, and you don’t want to move. It is most likely a different story for all of us, whether it be breaking something, finding out you got caught, or just being in shock. About 2 years ago, when I was 14, I had this feeling...
